QILIN [ALL AGES]
Summer 2019 / Non-cooperative Coloring Project
Sculptor - Mona Studio
This piece is a reinterpretation of a kit from MŌNA Studio, repainted to evoke the image of a Blue Qilin. The scene was crafted using materials such as decayed wood, epoxy resin, UV clear gel, and various diorama-making tools.
A matte paint technique, diluted at different levels, was used to create a frosty mist effect—simulating the Qilin's breath or the frost it stirs as it walks across the grass. A foggy, pre-frozen effect was also applied to the lake surface to suggest the moment just before ice begins to form. UV gel was used to create small water and ice effect parts where the surface begins to ripple or harden.
For the Qilin’s paintwork, pearl paints were used to achieve a unique bluish iridescence on its skin, giving it an otherworldly glow. Purple pearl paint was also applied selectively to different parts of the body to enhance its mystical presence and add visual interest.
